ECU Development (HIL/SIL)

ECU Development with dSPACE: Seamless SIL to HIL Validation for Automotive Systems

dSPACE delivers comprehensive solutions for ECU software development and validation, leveraging both Software-in-the‑Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the‑Loop (HIL) simulation across the full development lifecycle. These integrated platforms help automotive engineers accelerate testing, ensure quality, and transition seamlessly from virtual environments to real-time hardware testing.

What Is Software-in-the-Loop (SIL)?

SIL enables ECU software validation before the actual hardware exists. Virtual ECUs (V‑ECUs) encapsulate production-level code, including AUTOSAR components and generated application logic. These run on PC-based systems such as dSPACE VEOS, enabling early integration testing, automated regression flows, and scalable testing in the cloud.

Key advantages:

  • Developers can execute SIL tests anywhere at any time—no need for real ECU hardware.
  • Full traceability and automation allow continuous integration testing immediately after code changes.
  • Reusability of plant models, test artifacts, and scenarios when transitioning to HIL.

What Is Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)?

HIL testing connects real ECUs to real-time plant simulation environments, allowing direct interaction with virtual vehicle models. dSPACE’s SCALEXIO system provides modular, high-performance hardware to emulate vehicle dynamics, sensor inputs, and bus communications in closed-loop fashion.

Benefits include:

  • High repeatability and safety, allowing exhaustive testing of corner cases without physical prototypes.
  • Full simulation of bus and network behavior (CAN, FlexRay, LIN, Ethernet) through restbus models.
  • Scalable test benches, from desktop setups to rack-mounted systems, configurable per project needs.

Unified SIL-to-HIL Workflow

dSPACE ensures a seamless transition from SIL to HIL, enabling consistent use of models, test cases, and configurations across both environments. This unified workflow is key to accelerating ECU development cycles while maintaining test coverage and traceability.

Supporting tools include:

  • VEOS for SIL, supporting virtual execution of V‑ECUs and FMUs.
  • SCALEXIO for HIL, running the same test scripts, parameter sets, and plant models in real-time.
  • AutomationDesk and SYNECT for test automation, execution, and artifact management across rounds of testing and team collaboration.

Core Components & Toolchain

  1. Virtual ECUs (V‑ECUs)

Soft ECUs or V‑ECUs created from Simulink/TargetLink or AUTOSAR models allow full functional testing without hardware. These can be reused in both PC-based SIL and real-time HIL systems.

  1. VEOS SIL Platform

A scalable software environment that executes V‑ECUs and plant simulations deterministically on desktop or cloud infrastructure, accelerating test coverage and enabling parallel execution.

  1. SCALEXIO Real-Time Hardware

Highly configurable real-time hardware paired with ConfigurationDesk allows seamless deployment of models from Simulink into real-time HIL, supporting extensive I/O and network emulation.

  1. SYNECT & AutomationDesk

SYNECT manages test artifacts and variant dependencies, enabling efficient continuous integration. AutomationDesk supports GUI-based test authoring and test suite execution in SIL and HIL environments.

Primary Use Cases

Early Validation & Development

  • Perform functional and integration tests in SIL when hardware is not yet available.
  • Detect functional defects early and fix them before hardware prototype stages.

Full ECU Validation & Testing

  • Validate software and hardware integration, including error injection and communication robustness.
  • Conduct testing under real-time conditions, ensuring coverage of protocols and edge cases.

Continuous Integration & Regression Testing

  • Integrate SIL and HIL tests into CI/CD pipelines for automated nightly builds and parallel test runs.
  • Maintain traceability of requirements, test cases, and results across teams and systems.
